LAWPRO grant supports tree nursery expansion

Over thirty volunteers of a wide range of ages and nationalities joined us at our community tree nursery day on Saturday 3rd August in Newtownmountkennedy.

Our main focus for the day was building more raised beds and through great teamwork we managed to increase the number of beds on the site from 12 to 30! This is great preparation for the next season of seed collection which starts in autumn. We also transplanted hundreds of alder, birch and willow seedlings from trays into the raised beds.

Development in our tree nursery this year is being supported by a Community Grant from the Local Authority Waters Programme. Find out more about their work here

The main objective of this nursery is collect and grow seed from trees within the Wicklow Mountains National Park Special Area of Conservation and preserve the distinct genetics of these woodlands. Once the trees have been grown in size for a few years they will be planted back out by NPWS rangers in various reforestation projects in the mountains.

We'll be holding a volunteer day at this busy project on the first weekend of every month going forward. Join us for the next one here.
