Helping at a hazelnut organic farm in Dunlavin
40 years ago Simon Kirwan collected vouchers from his Weetabix boxes, in exchange he received a hazelnut sapling which he planted in his front garden.
That same tree greeted us on our visit last Saturday - standing 30ft tall, and is the inspiration for his now 1000+ organic hazelnut farm in Dunlavin.
Simon gave our 13 volunteers a brilliant tour of his property and we then got to work, providing some tree maintenance and grass stomping - even getting to see some hazelnuts start to flower.
Each volunteer left feeling inspired about how we can produce food and protect nature on the same land, and with a packet of hazelnuts to enjoy - thanks Simon for a great day!
